THE WIMBLEDON OF PICKLEBALL – PICKLEDON!
Since its inception in 1877, Wimbledon Championships has been the epitome of tennis. Boasting a history of longer than 140 years, this tournament remains one of the sport’s most sought-after championships for professional athletes and spectators alike. Held at London’s All England Club on outdoor grass courts with recently added retractable roofs over two main courts – it is more than just an event; it is widely recognized as a sacred place where dreams are made and accomplished within the world of tennis! The grandeur of Wimbledon continues to capture hearts across continents.
Pickleball is quickly becoming a renowned sport worldwide, with many hailing it as the new tennis. As pickleball continues to make its mark, one might wonder — what will be this booming sports’ Wimbledon? Where will players strive to reach and which court or venue can become the iconic site for matches of epic proportion? With the rising professionalization of the sport and its related leagues, a “Wimbledon” of our own makes sense to bring all of the current fractured tournaments into an annual focal point of a final championship competition. With the sport booming as it is, a new state-of-the-art complex is called for but doesn’t yet exist. This is a great opportunity.
One group of pickleball aficionados and entrepreneurs has the answer – the Pechanga Resort in Temecula, California. The “PickleDon” group as they are called, has proposed a multi-use stadium and pickleball complex on tribal lands near the Pechanga resort. As they explain, this location has many benefits such as year-round excellent weather, close proximity to millions of people, a few different international airports, and substantial resort amenities and infrastructure.
